For the last six weeks the Manassas Chapter of the Heritage Preservation Association (HPA), has repeatedly contacted the office of Prince William County Chairman Sean Connaughton in an attempt to arrange a meeting with him. The reason we would like to meet with Mr. Connaugton is to let him know of the widespread public support for a Confederate Heritage and History Proclamation.
We do not understand why Mr. Connaughton will not meet with us. HPA feels that the Chairman would not show the same disrespect for other Community Civic groups as he is showing us. In fact, we feel Mr. Connaughton has taken the initiative to reach out to many groups within Prince William County, except those that are proud of our Confederate Heritage and History in Prince William County. In this election season, does Mr. Connaugton really feel that he can alienate such an important part of his base support?
Our County's Confederate Heritage and History is important to the County's economic well being through tourism, and HPA feels that the County leadership should accord it the proper respect that it duly deserves. The County does not seem to mind exploiting local Confederate history in attempting to attract tourists to the County, yet the current County leadership seems to think recognizing this history would be divisive. However, they don't feel it is divisive to collect the tax dollars generated by this history.
The County issues proclamations for other groups to commemorate their contributions to the County. So why is the Chairman so opposed to do it for what is truly a most important part of our County history?
